Another Clovis Unified student is headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Fifty students from 25 districts participated in the competition, but Fugman Elementary fourth-grader Achuth Vinay took the crown at the Fresno County Spelling Bee on Tuesday, March 19. Vinay won with the word “bowstave.” Sixth-grader Shiv Mehrotra-Varma took second place.
This won’t be the first time a Vinay will be heading to the National Spelling Bee as Achuth’s older sister Ananya was crowned the national champion back in 2017. Ananya is now an eighth-grader at Granite Ridge Intermediate and assists in coaching the Fugman Spelling Bee team.
The 92nd Scripps National Spelling Bee will be taking place from May 26 to May 30. The competition will be held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in National Harbor, Md.
