Barnes & Noble expansion brings new store to Clovis

December 26, 2025 — Barnes & Noble’s plan to open 60 new stores in 2026 will include a new location in Clovis, giving local readers another place to shop for books, gifts, and more.

The new Barnes & Noble will move into the former JOANN store on Herndon Avenue, located in the Clovis Crossing Shopping Center at 1065 Herndon Ave. The space became available earlier this year after the craft retailer shuttered its Clovis, Fresno, and Visalia locations.

JOANN’s closures followed the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in January, the second such filing in less than a year. As part of the restructuring process, the retailer announced plans to close more than 500 underperforming stores nationwide. Going-out-of-business sales were later launched at all remaining locations, including those in the Central Valley, as the company began winding down operations.

Those sales, which lasted several weeks, came with limitations. Gift cards were only accepted through the end of February, returns were halted, and long-standing discounts for groups such as teachers and Girl Scouts were paused.

With JOANN’s departure, the large Herndon Avenue storefront sat vacant only briefly before plans for its next use became public. Barnes & Noble’s website lists the Clovis store with an expected opening date of May 2026.

The addition reflects a broader shift for the bookseller, which has increasingly invested in physical locations as community-oriented spaces. For Clovis residents, the upcoming store represents both a familiar retail location being reimagined and a new chapter for the shopping center—one that many local book lovers are already eager to see open.
