November 18, 2025 — Clark Intermediate School is preparing to retire its longtime “Chieftains” mascot as Clovis Unified moves to comply with a state law requiring the removal of Native American imagery from public school branding. The transition comes in response to AB-3074, a measure signed last year that gives districts until July 1, 2026, to replace mascots tied to Native American references.

District leaders recently shared an update with the Clovis Unified school board, outlining early feedback from families, students, and staff. A community survey surfaced a wide range of ideas—from playful options like Chihuahuas and Krakens to more traditional contenders such as Cowboys and Cubs. Even so, district officials indicated that the preferred direction is to align Clark Intermediate’s mascot with that of Clovis High, continuing the district’s practice of pairing intermediate schools with their corresponding high school identity.

While the conversation around the new mascot is underway, the cost of a full transition remains unclear. Staff are now compiling a detailed inventory of uniforms, signs, and campus branding that would need to be updated once the change is approved.

The Clovis Unified Governing Board is expected to review and consider the recommendation at its December meeting, marking the next step in a process that will reshape Clark Intermediate’s campus identity in the coming years.
