Shaver Lake Fishing Report – February 2015
The recent spring-like weather has brought many anglers to Shaver Lake. Some reported a limit or two per boat, but Kirk Marshal and his two buddies from Visalia went a little farther. They caught nine trophy-sized trout between 3 and nearly 4 pounds while trolling near the dam with spoons. Being good sportsmen, the trio kept a fish each for dinner and tossed the six other big guys back in.
The water level is maintaining, and launching is good at the Sierra ramp. The big production at the dam is a tad different as most trollers are targeting the island, Black Rock and Eagle Point with good results. Most are fishing 15 to 25 feet down and have been using a variety of beaded spinner tackle with a tip of crawler behind flashers.
Bank fishermen have been out in numbers, but have had hit or miss results, depending on where the fish are hanging out. Crawlers or Power Bait continue to have the best success for bankies.
I will be joining tackle maker and kokanee expert Captain Jack Yandell for a Shaver Lake fishing seminar this Thursday, Feb. 26 at Herb Bauer Sporting Goods on Blackstone just north of Bullard. We’ll give tips on catching fish at Shaver, jigging for kokanee and the expected water conditions for the upcoming season. Custom rod maker Terry Walton will add his thoughts on kokanee fishing, and Shaver Lake Trophy Trout Project Planting Chairman Bob Bernier will discuss DF&W trophy fish plants. A free raffle will be held after the presentation.

Shaver Lake has started kicking out trophy-sized rainbows, as evidenced by this recent photo of three nice rainbows weighing in at 3 to nearly 4 pounds. The fish were caught by Kirk Marshal and his two friends from Visalia.
