July 5, 2025 — What began as a backyard blaze on the evening of the Fourth of July quickly escalated into a destructive fire that tore through a Clovis neighborhood, engulfing one home, multiple vehicles, and at least five boats, according to updated information from the Clovis Fire Department.

The fire broke out just after 9 p.m. near Gettysburg and Villa Avenues, and thick orange smoke could be seen billowing into the night sky as fire crews rushed to the scene. Early reports indicated that multiple homes had caught fire, but officials have since confirmed that only one residence was affected—though the loss was still extensive.

Fire Chief Chris Ekk described the night as one of the busiest in his 6 1/2 year career.

Jeanine Smith, the homeowner where the fire reportedly originated, said she was alerted that her backyard was on fire and rushed to try to save her cat, which was trapped outside. Firefighters, however, could not allow her into the burning area for safety reasons.

Several neighbors were seen using garden hoses to protect their homes and fences from the encroaching flames before firefighters arrived. The Sanger Fire Department also assisted in battling the fire.

While no injuries were reported, the extent of property loss was significant. In addition to the home and boats, multiple vehicles were destroyed. Power outages in the area were reported around 10:22 p.m., according to PG&E.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities are urging residents to report any suspicious activity or illegal fireworks.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
