On the evening of Thursday, May 4, the Sisterhood of Survivors (SOS) program hosted the eighth annual Girls Night Out at the Clovis Veterans Memorial District’s Liberty Ballroom. The nonprofit organization supports breast cancer awareness and promotes a camaraderie and support for patients and sur
Admission to the event w as free. There were complimentary gifts and vendor samples, wine tasting, food and the opportunity to shop for a variety of unique items.
“What fun,” said one guest. “There are so many neat things to see and everyone’s so friendly. I really like that money spent here goes to a good cause.”
Conversation hummed and music played while guests browsed tables that displayed sparkling jewelry, lotions, oils, clothing, books and health products. Of special interest were raffles, drawings and a silent auction. In all, there were 56 vendors and around 500 attendees at the fundraiser.
“This is a great time to pick up gifts for Mother’s Day,” said Jody Jo Mize from 93.7 KISS Country, who emceed the event. Mize, herself a breast cancer survivor, spoke to vendors and encouraged guests to shop and participate in fundraising activities. All the money raised went directly to assist newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their families.
“It is always wonderful to meet new people,” said Shary Wofford, SOS Board Chairman. “Everyone was great, vendors and attendees alike. We are very blessed to be a part of such an exciting event and for such a great cause. This event is an avenue for Sisterhood of Survivors to raise funds to continue our mission of providing educational materials to breast cancer survivors, supporters and the community at large. We offer personal one-on-one outreach and support from one breast cancer survivor to another.”
The mission of Sisterhood of Survivors is to “assist newly diagnosed breast cancer patients and their families offering ongoing support to those affected by breast cancer through peer support and educational resources.” Through encouragement, support, monthly luncheon meetings and a website, patients and their families know they are part of a community and not alone.
The quarterly newsletter is filled with inspiration, resources, event information and volunteer opportunities. SOS breast cancer survivors personally deliver, at no charge, a special tote to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. This gives the patient an opportunity to talk with an experienced cancer survivor.
The tote is filled with breast cancer educational information, resources and donated items. Over the years, SOS cancer survivors have delivered several hundred totes to newly diagnosed breast cancer patients. They have also participated in many educational community events
There is always a need for volunteers and donations. For more information about SOS or for participation opportunities, visit www.sisterhoodofsurvivors.org or call 439-2183.
