July 9, 2025 — It has been less than a month since Clovis lost a true champion of words, art, and community. On June 18, 2025, Daniel Howard Dunklee, 71, passed away after a long illness. A lifelong resident, Dan’s impact is still deeply felt across our community, especially in literary and artistic circles.

Many in our community knew Dan through his dedicated work as a bookseller, publisher, and antiques dealer. He was the proud co-owner, with his wife Peggy, of the popular A Book Barn, a beloved local institution, and a familiar, beloved face always ready to spark a conversation about literature or help a local artist.

The Friends of the Fresno County Library shared their deep appreciation for his contributions on their Facebook page. They stated, “Dan Dunklee was a longtime member, board member, and past president of the Friends of the Fresno County Public Library, as well as a driving force behind our famous Big Book Sales. A writer, bookseller, and advocate for libraries and literacy, Dan no doubt touched countless lives across Fresno County and beyond. We thank him very much for his work, and we’ll miss him very much.” His legacy with the library, particularly the “Big Book Sales,” continues to benefit countless readers.

Dan’s passion extended beyond his work. He was a loving husband to his high school sweetheart, Peggy, for 52 years, and together they inspired a love of reading and art in their children, Chris, a photographer, and Chaunacey, a librarian. In his free time, Dan was often found with a book in hand, writing, or volunteering. He also cherished moments enjoying the Central Coast scenery and fishing.

Beneath his “occasionally gruff exterior,” as his family described, was a deep love for humankind and a strong belief in the power of artistic expression. His influence on those he met and the many lives he touched through his various endeavors will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.

Dan was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Corinne Dunklee; his father, Howard Sherman Dunklee; and his sister, Mary Dunklee. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; his children, Chris and Chaunacey; his sister, Beverly Pursell; and his grandchildren, Sonja and Maia Dunklee. He will also be fondly remembered by many extended family members and his beloved “puppers” Skye and Jasper.

As we move forward, Dan Dunklee’s immense impact on the Clovis community, especially in the literary and artistic realms, remains a testament to his dedication and passion. His spirit lives on in the pages of books read, the art created, and the lives enriched by his kindness and support.
