December 2, 2025 — A crowd bundled in scarves and holiday sweaters filled the Clovis Civic Center Thursday night as the City of Clovis Christmas Tree Lighting brought music, tradition, and a new charitable effort to the heart of Old Town.

Cold air rolled across 5th Street as families settled in near the Civic Center lawn, the glow of vendor lights and the bustle of excited children setting the tone long before the tree ever flickered on. School choirs from across the district opened the night with a lineup of classics — “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “Walking in a Winter Wonderland,” and a striking a cappella performance of “Carol of the Bells.” During the upbeat bridges of “Walking in a Winter Wonderland” and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” the audience joined in with rhythmic claps, warming their hands and the atmosphere.

Mayor Vong Mouanoutoua welcomed attendees and shared why he invited Councilmember Matt Basgall to lead this year’s ceremony, noting Basgall’s lifelong roots in Clovis. Basgall, standing before the crowd, made a point to highlight the efforts of the Clovis Youth Commission, and for good reason.

The ceremony marked the launch of the commission’s inaugural “Threads of Joy” clothing drive, a new initiative benefiting Clovis students in grades 1 through 12. In partnership with Exceptional Parents Unlimited, the drive will collect new and like-new clothing items ranging from socks and jackets to sweatshirts and pants. While attendees were encouraged to bring donations to the tree lighting, drop-off bins will remain available December 1–8 at the following locations:

  • City Hall, Administration – 1033 5th St.

  • PD & Fire Headquarters – 1233 5th St.

  • Clovis Senior Activity Center – 735 3rd St.

  • Clovis Fire Station 6 – 2388 Encino Ave.

  • Clovis Recreation – 3495 Clovis Ave.

Just as Basgall wrapped his remarks, Dolley the Trolley rolled into view, decked out in garland and lights. Cheers went up as Santa Claus stepped off, accompanied by local children dressed as his helpers, their tiny hats bobbing as they hurried toward the stage. Santa joined Basgall at the podium, telling the crowd how much he enjoys visiting Clovis each year, a sentiment that drew loud applause from the families gathered below.

Then came the moment everyone had been waiting for. With mittened hands raised high, Santa led the crowd in a countdown from ten. At zero, the Civic Center Christmas tree burst into light, drawing a wave of cheers that echoed down the street.

The evening closed with more music, photos with Santa, and families lingering near the glowing tree, a familiar Clovis scene, made brighter this year by a new tradition dedicated to helping local kids stay warm through every season.
