September 7, 2025 — The “Young Historians” class kicked off this week with an engaging exploration of California’s unique history, drawing in young minds eager to learn. The inaugural session focused on laying the groundwork for a year of historical discovery.

The first class began with an open discussion where students shared what they already knew about California and its notable characteristics. This was followed by an introduction to map reading, a fundamental skill for any historian. The class collectively began a large, detailed map of California that will serve as a living document, growing with their knowledge throughout the year.

A significant portion of the class was dedicated to the Channel Islands. Students embarked on a virtual tour and watched a video to learn about the islands’ unique ecosystem, discussing the native plants and animals that call them home.

The historical journey continues next week with a fascinating look at prehistoric California. The “Young Historians” will delve into the world of the Pygmy Mammoths of Santa Rosa Island and other prehistoric animals. This will be followed by a virtual tour and video exploration of the renowned La Brea Tar Pits, offering a glimpse into the ice age.

To round out the week, the students will go on a nature walk to gather materials for a hands-on project: building their own Pleistocene Shoebox Diorama. This activity will allow them to creatively reconstruct scenes from prehistoric California.
