July 21, 2025 — The nostalgic arcade vibes were alive and well at The Backyard Social Club on Sunday, July 20, where they hosted their video game tournament. In the front room, over 20 local gamers put their skills to the test with popular fighting titles like “Tekken 8,” “Mortal Kombat X,” and “Samurai Showdown” on PlayStation 5.

The event was 21 and up, and the adult participants showed a childlike wonder while working the consoles. There was a $5 venue fee and a $5 entry fee for each game.

David Emanuel organizes these video game nights once a month, a tradition he started in the fall of 2024. “One of the big reasons why I like to host these gaming tournaments is to encourage gamers to socialize, get out of the house, and make new friends,” Emanuel explained. “That’s what the purpose of these gaming tournaments is all about.”

The Backyard Social Club has welcomed David and his gamer friends with open arms, and it’s become one of their most popular events. While the tournament was taking place, the bar also hosted a karaoke night. Other popular staples include their trivia nights every Tuesday, open mics on Thursdays, and hosting musical acts. They even recently held a tattooing class.

David’s connections with some of the employees led him to host the tournaments at their location. The bar is also known for its good selection of beer and delicious food menu. Among the gamers, the pizza is a particular favorite while they play.

Matthew McDonnell, whose gamer name is “Surge,” was the winner of the “Tekken” tournament. Surge enjoys the atmosphere The Backyard provides and encourages those who haven’t tried it to give it a shot. “Everyone shows up, everyone has a great time, they get better, they constantly improve,” said Surge. “We’re all slowly becoming family, so I think that’s the best part.”

Bartender and local artist Ali Walker, who has been with the bar since it first opened in 2023, speaks highly of the unique experience they offer. She credits their diverse events for bringing out the fun in people. “It is so much fun. The different events we have bring out so many different types of people, and just bring everyone together, it’s a blast,” said Walker.
