August 23, 2025 — Clovis Community College (CCC) is making fresh, healthy food more accessible to students and the wider community with its on-campus Farmers Market. The market, which offers free produce to attendees, is a key part of the college’s ongoing effort to address students’ basic needs, specifically food insecurity.

Bonita Gomez, the director of basic needs and retention services at Clovis, describes the Farmers Market as an extension of the college’s basic needs program. “It’s just another way of helping support students who are experiencing food insecurity,” she said. The initiative complements other resources like the on-campus Crush Pantry and CalFresh screening services, creating a pathway for students to get the support they need.

The produce, which has included items like mini watermelons, spaghetti squash, and various peppers, is donated by the Central California Food Bank. Gomez noted that the event, which has been running for years, has seen an excellent response from the student body. Over 300 students attended a recent market, and many have become more comfortable visiting the Crush Pantry after their initial experience.

The Farmers Market is held on the third Thursday of each month during the fall and spring semesters, with a total of eight to nine markets per school year. The event takes place in front of the bookstore, providing a central and welcoming location for students, faculty, staff, and the community. “We try and make it very welcoming,” Gomez said, adding that the event includes music and participation from various members of the college community.

Gomez emphasized that the market is open to everyone, including members of the public. “It’s a really good time here on campus,” she said, encouraging new visitors to come and experience the event. For many, it’s not just about the food but also about the sense of community and the fun atmosphere that the college creates.
