December 29, 2025 — The Clovis Police Department will increase patrols on New Year’s Eve as part of a DUI Saturation detail aimed at keeping local roads safe during the holiday.
Additional officers will be on patrol from 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 31, through 2 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, watching for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“Impaired driving is preventable,” said Corporal Mark Bradford, traffic supervisor with the Clovis Police Department. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or taken drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”
Police officials emphasized that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Certain prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. Drivers are urged to follow directions for use and read warning labels that advise against driving.
While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
According to the department, drivers arrested for a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license.
The New Year’s Eve enforcement effort is funded through a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Clovis police encourage residents planning to celebrate the holiday to arrange for a sober ride, use ride-sharing services, or designate a driver in advance to ensure a safe start to the new year.
