August 4, 2025 — The sound of hooves and the dust of the arena are a familiar rhythm at Rick Kelley’s Performance Horses, a multi-faceted hub for all things Western horse culture. Rick and his wife, Alison, are the owners and operators of this dedicated facility, and their passion for horses is evident in every aspect of their work, from the competitive show circuit to the fundamentals of their youth programs.
During a recent interview, the Kelleys spoke about the diverse services their business offers. They are heavily focused on the show world, particularly with the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) and the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). However, their business is more than just a training ground for champions. They also run a robust lesson program, a breeding program, an event center, and have even partnered with local charter schools to offer equestrian classes as part of their physical education programs.

Clovis has a rich history in the horse industry, and Rick, a lifelong resident, is proud to carry on that legacy. While much of the industry has shifted to other regions, he maintains that their barn is one of the top-rated facilities in California, a claim backed by the success of their clients. Rick explains that their program is primarily for “non-pro” and youth riders, noting that they have what they believe is the largest youth program in the country.
This focus on young riders is central to the Kelleys’ philosophy. For them, riding is not just a recreational activity; it’s a demanding athletic pursuit that teaches discipline and responsibility. They pride themselves on teaching their students to be true horsemen, emphasizing the importance of horse health and care above all else. This commitment to excellence pays off, as many of their students have gone on to earn Division I NCAA scholarships at prestigious universities with equestrian programs.
The Kelleys’ dedication is a 24/7 commitment. “This is a working ranch. You never have a day off,” Rick explains, a sentiment Alison agrees with. With around 70 horses on-site, the ranch operates year-round, ensuring every animal receives the highest level of care. This includes a full maintenance program with modern therapy equipment like PEMF and ice therapy machines, keeping the horses at the top of their game.

For Rick, his love for horses stems from the breeding process and watching young horses grow and succeed. For Alison, it’s the relationships she builds with the young riders, watching them grow from children into confident young adults. When asked to describe the feeling of riding a horse, Rick offered a vivid analogy: “Open your legs, sit on a Volkswagen at 45 miles an hour, and then hit the brakes.” It’s a feeling of unity between horse and rider that, once experienced, “you’re hooked.”
Rick and Alison hope more people in the Clovis community will discover this rewarding passion. They welcome beginners of all ages and backgrounds, offering private lessons tailored to each individual’s skill level. For anyone considering getting into horsemanship, the Kelleys invite them to come out and experience firsthand what it means to be part of the Clovis horse community.
