October 3, 2024 — A woman held up a glass candy dish, turning it toward the light as a friend laughed and called out from across the table, “Only two dollars? You better grab it before I do!” Moments like these played out all morning at the Clovis Senior Activity Center on Thursday, where bargain hunters packed the annual fall rummage sale in search of hidden gems.
By 7:30 a.m., eager shoppers were already lined up outside, waiting for the doors to open. When they did, crowds spilled in to browse tables stacked with antiques, holiday décor, puzzles, jewelry, and even potted plants. “This has been going on for over a decade, and it’s just a great community tradition,” said Mai Kou Yang, recreation specialist at the Senior Center. “You never know what you’ll find.”
This year’s sale featured 20 vendor booths, which sold out in advance. Each vendor paid $25 for a space, with proceeds benefiting Senior Center programs. Beyond vendor items, volunteers spent weeks sorting through donated goods, organizing them into categories from clothing and toys to electronics and office supplies.
The event also included an auction with fewer than 20 themed gift baskets — ranging from restaurant gift cards to holiday decorations — all donated by local supporters. Shoppers also found their way to the snack bar, where the Jolly Times Committee served up famous chili dogs, nachos, donuts, coffee, and soda.
“It’s not just about the shopping,” one organizer said. “It’s about friendship, community, and even giving our volunteers a sense of purpose. They love coming out here to make this happen.”
Over 20 volunteers helped with set-up, sales, and customer service throughout the morning. Attendance was estimated in the hundreds, with the Clovis Parks Department assisting with logistics. Unsold items were set aside for Heinz Hospice’s ReStore, ensuring they’d continue to benefit others.
Traditionally held twice a year, the sale was only offered once in 2025 due to limited volunteer availability. Still, Yang said the tradition is alive and well. “Come out with your family,” he said. “You never know what treasures you’ll find, and you’ll be part of something truly great for the community.”
