October, 4, 2025 — Ballots for Proposition 50 are hitting mailboxes this week, and local leaders are urging Clovis residents to pay close attention to what’s at stake before casting their vote.

Proposition 50 would replace California’s independent Citizens Redistricting Commission with a group of state lawmakers, allowing them to redraw political district boundaries ahead of the 2026, 2028, and 2030 elections. The proposal marks a major shift away from the voter-approved system designed to prevent partisan gerrymandering and ensure fair representation across the state.

Fresno County Supervisor and former Clovis Mayor Nathan Magsig is among those encouraging a “No” vote, warning that the measure could undermine local representation and rural voices in the Central Valley.

“Proposition 50 would give Sacramento politicians the power to pick their voters instead of voters picking their representatives,” Magsig said in a statement Friday. “This is about protecting fair elections and keeping power where it belongs, with the people.”

Opponents argue the measure could reduce the influence of communities like Clovis and the broader Central Valley, where political lines often determine how much local needs are heard at the state level. Magsig added that the cost of implementing Proposition 50 — estimated at more than $280 million — would also strain state resources that could otherwise go toward roads, schools, and public safety.

Ballots are being mailed beginning Saturday, October 4, and residents are encouraged to vote promptly to ensure their ballots are counted.
